Welcome to the World Bazaar
Just as the best journeys are often defined by the friendships that spring
from traveling together, and new places are best discovered beside a
knowledgeable expert – so it is with the World Bazaar. We mirrored those
experiences to create a vibrant cultural experience that reflects Road
Scholar’s mission and the mission of our trusted partner, NOVICA, who
actively works with artisans throughout the world.
Together we’re excited to bring you the finest fair trade artisan products
while preserving global artistic traditions for the generations to come.
The bazaar is an extension of Road Scholar programs – it is an educational
experience designed to let you delve deeply into the culture of a region
through the discovery of unique artisan products. Behind each artisan
product there is a story, the artisan’s story. You’ll find Chaloemphon’s
story below.
” Leather craft is more than a source of income – through
leather I also meet many new friends around the world.”
Working with leather is never boring and I’ve never
felt like giving up. Each process – cutting, sewing,
and dyeing – is done by hand. When someone asks
me to teach them my craft, I teach them gladly.
I’ve been doing this in Chiang Mai since 1986. It’s
been a happy time and I‘ve enjoyed my work a lot. I
have a small, warm family. My daughter is going to
graduate in nursing and she is also a special violin
teacher. My wife, my daughter and I enjoy music
every evening. My wife plays the cello, I play guitar,
and our daughter plays the violin. That’s it – my
happy family.
